Company History

In the mid-19th century, German immigrants founded the Aman religious community in the US state of Iowa. Over time, this settlement turned into a large village.

In 1932, the leaders of this community invited its residents to abandon public utilities. This step helped expand the business, develop infrastructure and acquire new technologies. Amana grew and developed, the first plants and factories appeared.

In 1934, the novice businessman George Foerstner proposed to establish the production of refrigerators designed for drinks. It was then that the Electrical Equipment Company was formed, later renamed Amana Refrigeration. In 936, the production of large refrigeration units for storing food was established here. The company's products have become very popular in the United States.

In the early 40s, Amana Refrigeration for its achievements in the implementation of advanced technologies, was awarded the prestigious E classification and received an order from the US Department of Defense for the production of portable refrigerators for naval and ground forces. However, the company did not stop producing industrial refrigerators. In 1947, an innovative product for the whole world entered the market - a vertical household freezer. In 1956, Amana Refrigeration began to produce air conditioning systems. A year later, the first refrigerator with a freezer compartment was located, which was located below. Three years later, a two-chamber refrigerator with a removable front panel appears, which has become not just a device for storing food, but a kind of interior decoration. The company begins to work on the development of all kinds of design for its brainchild.

In 1967, Amana began to manufacture microwave ovens. The debut was the 115-watt Radarange microwave. A year later, the company proposed a unique “refrigerator within a refrigerator” system designed for refrigerators. It was a special chamber for storing meat, doubling the shelf life.

In the 70s, Amana reduced the energy consumption of its units. In 1988, the company significantly expanded the range of products, offering new models of refrigerators, air conditioners and microwave ovens. A year later, a refrigerator with a transparent interior was released, then built-in refrigerators also appeared. As a result, Amana is not becoming an ordinary manufacturer of household appliances, but the largest corporation presenting its products not only in the United States, but throughout the world. In 2001, it was acquired by a corporation called Maytag.
